We spent August much like June and July, bouncing around central Colorado. Most BLM and National Forest land allows dry camping for only 14 days at a time, and after that you can’t come back for awhile. So we went back and forth between Poncha Springs, Nathrop and Leadville.
Temperatures were generally between 50 and 80 degrees. If it got a bit cold, we went south. If it got too warm, we went north. The group size varied from five to twenty, depending on who was around.
From June 6 until October 1 we did not plug the RV into any electrical outlet. We powered everything from our batteries, charged by solar panels.
We got to meet a lot of interesting people.
We hiked the Colorado Trail, we saw a couple of waterfalls, visited a ghost town and generally enjoyed being in the great outdoors.
At the end of September a cold snap was headed our way and we scattered to the winds. Some went on to Arizona, others to Utah or New Mexico, and we headed to Texas. We weren’t planning on getting here this early, but it seems that Sam’s Club is having difficulty keeping golf cart batteries in stock and we needed four to replace ours (which were seemingly generally ok but were consistently giving very low Specific Gravity readings). The closest store with four in stock was Lubbock, Texas. At least two of them were still covered under warranty.
We moseyed back over to New Mexico for a bit, picked up a couple of portable solar panels, and hiked around the Guadalupe mountains. And while we were there, we thought hey, why not? So we hiked to the top of Guadalupe Peak, the tallest point in Texas. We have now done this in two different states! We’re practically ready for Everest…
We thought about revisiting the Big Bend area but it was still too warm down there so we stopped short in the Ft. Davis area.
Next week we’ll be in Austin, the week after in Harlingen for a birding festival, then back to the Dallas/Fort Worth area for Dad’s 90th birthday!
That’s all for this dispatch. Hope this finds you happy and healthy, and thanks for reading!
